Ultrasound of the Sole of the Foot

A new Approach

Pathology of the sole of the foot is very common in everyday clinical practice. The fact that this is an anatomically complex area with many small structures has meant that its ultrasound examination has not attracted the attention of the medical community, despite its usefulness in this area.

This article presents a detailed review of the anatomy of the plantar aspect of the foot, following an order that will facilitate better understanding and a more simplified approach. This is followed by a detailed ultrasound examination strategy which will help practitioners to recognize the relevant anatomical structures, the first and most necessary step toward being able to diagnose pathologies.

The intention is to make the sole of the foot a less forbidding area and thereby encourage readers to become more familiar with it.
